Body found in desert in southwest valley is apparent homicide victim

A man found dead Saturday in a desert area in southwest Las Vegas appears to be the victim of a homicide, police said.

The unidentified man was found by residents of a nearby homeless camp in a vacant lot in the area of West Russell Road and Polaris Avenue, just west of Interstate 15.

Las Vegas police Lt. Steve Herpolsheimer said a homeless person with a cell phone called police around 2 p.m. to report a person down in the area. When police arrived on scene, the man had been dead for at least five hours.

The victim also was homeless and might have gotten into a fight, Herpolsheimer said.

No more details were available Saturday.

Detectives from the violent crimes and homicide units were investigating the scene, Herpolsheimer added.

An investigation is ongoing. No arrest has been made, police said.
