Mayo experiment off to rocky start

O.J. Mayo and the Memphis Grizzlies are making their NBA Summer League debut at the Thomas & Mack Center.

As expected, Mayo is experimenting at point guard in the early going against the Atlanta Hawks. The third-year veteran is expected to play only the team’s first two games in Las Vegas.

In eight-plus minutes in the first quarter, Mayo has three turnovers to one assist and is 0-for-1 from the floor, though Memphis heads to the second quarter with a 16-13 lead over Atlanta.

There is a considerably thinner crowd watching Memphis-Atlanta than the Washington-L.A. Clippers game at Cox Pavilion, where No. 1 overall pick John Wall is playing his second game in the league for the Wizards.

Suns pull away from D-League Select

Earlier at the Thomas & Mack Center, Earl Clark had 18 points and five rebounds to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 96-88 victory over the D-League Select squad.

Scottie Reynolds scored 16 points and Gani Lawal and Matt Janning added 15 each for Phoenix, which outscored D-League Select 47-33 in the second half.

Russell Robinson led D-League Select with 17 points, and Curtis Withers contributed 16 points and seven rebounds.
