Suns blown out again

Sonny Weems scored 19 points and DeMar DeRozan added 16 as Toronto routed Phoenix 103-69 in the opening game of Day 2 of the NBA Vegas Summer League at Cox Pavilion.
It was the second straight day the Suns were blown out on this floor.
Joey Dorsey added six points and 11 rebounds for the Raptors.
Gani Lawal had 18 points and six rebounds for the Suns, and Earl Clark added 15 points.
Weems and Lawal added a little showmanship to their performances. Weems had the top two highlights of the first half with a pair of powerful slam dunks.
Lawal matched the effort in the second half, and perhaps did him one better with twin throwdowns late in the game.

Know Your History

Several fans swarmed Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan for autographs and pictures.
DeRozan had a decent rookie season for the Raptors after being selected in the lottery last year and is clearly one of the star attraction’s of Toronto’s summer league team.
It’s not surprising he would be a big draw for fans, but NBA Hall of Famer Adrian Dantley was sitting within three feet of DeRozan and went completely unnoticed.

Sharp-shooter in the crowd

As usual, several NBA players are sitting in the stands. Jarrett Jack and Reggie Evans of the Raptors were both here for the first game, for example.
There is a chance, however, that one of the best shooters in the building just might be a blond girl wearing a Stanford t-shirt in the front row.
Lindy LaRocque is sitting with her dad, a longtime local high school coach, and former Rebel Tyrell Jamerson.
LaRocque just completed her sophomore season at Stanford, which culminated in a loss to Connecticut in the championship game.

Coach in Training

Toronto Raptors guard Jarrett Jack is on the team’s bench in street clothes, clearly preparing himself for his post-playing career.
He shouted instructions at the summer league Raptors throughout the game.
Actually, his interests may be more self-serving than they appear.
Jack’s most common phrase throughout the game was, “Set a good screen, Solo.”
“Solo,” would be the nickname of Solomon Alabi, who was acquired via a draft-night trade.
An athletic forward, he could potentially fill a similar role to that filled by Chris Bosh for the Raptors in recent years.
If Alabi gets a substantial amount of playing time, Jack would sure love to see him set good screens to get him open for easy baskets.
