Koelbaek fires 70 for Rebels, leads tourney

Therese Koelbaek of UNLV shot her second straight 3-under-par 70 Friday to carry a two-stroke lead into today's final round of the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational at Albuquerque, N.M.
Koelbaek, a senior All-American from Denmark, was at 6-under 140 to lead a trio of players at 142. UNLV's Alejandra Guacaneme and Kristen Schelling were in a six-way tie for 20th at 4-over 250.
The Rebels were in seventh place at 22-over 606, 19 shots behind leader Ohio State.
■ WOMEN'S SOCCER -- Shawna Gordon scored midway through overtime for Long Beach State, handing host UNLV a 2-1 defeat in the Rebel Classic.
UNLV senior midfielder Amanda Forrester scored on a free kick in the first half. Long Beach State (5-3-1) tied it on Marysol Rosas' goal in the 54th minute.
The Rebels (5-3) close the tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday against UC Davis.
■ MEN'S SOCCER -- At Green Bay, Wis., UNLV suffered a 2-1 defeat to Wisconsin-Green Bay, which scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half.
The Rebels scored in the 64th minute when Stephen Sifuentes' cross was deflected in by a Green Bay defender.
UNLV (2-3) plays Robert Morris at 10 a.m. Sunday in its final game of the Green Bay Classic.
■ MEN'S TENNIS -- UNLV gained three victories in singles and one in doubles on the first day of the four-team UNLV Fall Invitational at Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Winners for the Rebels were Johannes Markel, Charlie Alvarado and Kyle Lynch in singles and Mehci Bouras and Bernard Schoeman in doubles.
The event continues through Sunday.
■ VOLLEYBALL -- UNLV (3-7) was swept by Cal State Northridge at Cox Pavilion, 25-11, 25-17, 25-18. Candice Thomas had eight kills for the Rebels and Sarah Nehf had seven. UNLV today faces San Jose State at noon and Xavier at 7 p.m.
