BRIEF

Landscape retrofit classes scheduled to begin Feb. 1

Area residents are invited to learn how to convert their water-guzzling, water-wasting yards into less-thirsty, water-efficient, energy-saving and attractive landscapes through University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's landscape retrofit classes.

Participants will be coached through the design process, creating their own designs for building a new or redesigning an old landscape.

The eight-week class begins Feb. 1 and continues each Monday morning from 9 a.m. to noon through March 22 at the Lifelong Learning Center, located at 8050 Paradise Road. Class size is limited and there is a $50 fee per landscape. (The fee is waived for those associated with the master gardener program.)

More than 500 Las Vegas Valley residents have completed the classes with outstanding results; some have been presented landscape design awards.

For more information, contact either the master gardener help line at 257-5555, Bob Morris at morrisr@unce.unr.edu, or the instructor, Mel Hengen, at mojavemel@aol.com.

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
