Arizona man dies of gunshot wound after conviction of sexual abuse

A northwest Arizona man died of a gunshot wound hours after he was convicted of sexual abuse.

Patrick Haslem, 59, was absent from court when attorneys presented his sex offense trial in Kingman about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. A welfare check led to the 11 a.m. discovery of the critically wounded Haslem at his home in a remote area between Lake Havasu City and Yucca.

He was rushed to Havasu Regional Medical Center in Lake Havasu City and his trial continued in Kingman.

At about 4:30 Tuesday afternoon, the jury found Haslem guilty of four counts of sexual abuse of his teenage granddaughter. He died about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday of a gunshot to the head, the Mohave County sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Trish Carter said the agency is treating Haslem’s death as a suicide.
