SIU leads UNLV at halftime

Junior guard Derrick Jasper scored 11 points but UNLV trailed Southern Illinois 37-34 at halftime tonight at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The Salukis (2-0) jumped ahead 18-6 just over six minutes into the game. But Jasper and Tre’Von Willis triggered an 18-2 run as the Rebels (2-0) reclaimed the lead.

Jasper scored seven of the team’s first 16 points. Willis made two free throws to give UNLV its first lead, 21-20, with 9:16 to go. Jasper led a fast break and passed to Willis, who hit a 3-pointer from the corner to make the score 24-20 at the 8:47 mark.

Southern Illinois, led by John Freeman’s 11 points, rallied late to take the lead at the half.
