Walker seeks names of needy for giveaway

Walker Furniture is still accepting letters on behalf of individuals and families in need for its 15th annual Home for the Holidays program.

This year, the company will provide 36 Clark County families with a houseful of brand-new furniture in time for the holiday season, said Larry Alterwitz, chief executive officer.

Walker Furniture relies on the public to submit letters describing the situation of needy individuals and families. All letters must be received by Monday.

Letters will be reviewed by outside, independent panels.

Letters, addressed to Larry Alterwitz, can be hand delivered to Walker Furniture, 301 S. Martin Luther King Blvd; faxed to 384-7772; or e-mailed to tmeier@walker furniture.com.

Deliveries of furniture will begin Dec. 18.

Eco-friendly flooring focus of center event

The latest information on eco-friendly flooring coverings and designs will be the focus of Sustainable Footprints, a special event for trade professionals and connoisseurs of design Wednesday at the Las Vegas Design Center.

Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event will take place at the center, located on the campus of World Market Center Las Vegas, 495 S. Grand Central Parkway.

"More and more, the environment is becoming an integral component of the design process, and both designers and their customers want to learn more about how they can incorporate sustainable flooring into their projects and homes," said Randy Wells, vice president of Las Vegas Design Center.

Featured guest speakers include award-winning designer Clodagh, an innovator and leader in environmental design. Additionally, there will be rug-specific special events in several showrooms.

At 10:30 a.m., Clodagh will present "Your Home, Your Sanctuary and Design Sustainability," highlighting commercial design trends and sustainability. During her 25-year career in New York, she has become a known leader for using sustainable materials and practices.

After her seminar, she will sign copies of her new book in the Tufenkian Artisan showroom, C-176.

The afternoon will include a dessert reception in the M Luxury Living/Masterlooms showroom, C-125, during which Patrick Sims, director of West Coast operations for M Luxury Living, will share his expertise and William Pinckard, a certified rug specialist and rug appraiser, will be available to answer questions about how to care for fine rugs as well as eco-friendly dyes.

Reservations are requested and can be made by e-mailing info@lvdesigncenter.com. All registered attendees will be entered to win a Magic Carpet Ride for two.

Gaining control over this annual weed is not easy to do

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
