UNLV baseball holds off New Mexico in MWC opener

Bryan Resnick hit a two-run homer, drove in three runs and scored twice Friday as the UNLV baseball team overcame five errors and opened Mountain West Conference play with a 7-5 victory over New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Resnick, Jesse Wight and Xavier Scruggs added RBI singles in the sixth to stake UNLV (8-7) to a 7-2 lead.

Rebels starter Corey Hales (3-0) gave up nine hits and four runs (one earned) in seven innings. He struck out three and walked one.

Adam Moser worked around an error in a scoreless ninth to get his second save.

• UNLV SOFTBALL -- The Rebels improved to 17-12-1 by sweeping Utah Valley (4-14) 11-1 in five innings and 4-1 at Eller Media Stadium.

Laura Briones had a three-run homer for UNLV in the first game, and Brittany Bolinger hit a grand slam in the second.

• UNLV WOMEN'S TENNIS -- The 42nd-ranked Lady Rebels lost 4-3 to No. 38 Virginia Commonwealth at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

UNLV (8-5) swept the three doubles matches for one point and got a singles victory by Anna Maskaljun to take a 2-0 lead. However, VCU (14-2) won the next four matches to claim the victory.

• UNLV MEN'S TENNIS -- The Rebels beat Ball State 5-2 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

UNLV (6-6) got singles victories from Elliot Wronski, Luca Barlocci, Wesley Burrows and Bryan Miller.

• CSN BASEBALL -- Tyler Lavigne and Colby Shreve each pitched complete games, and Braeden Schlehuber went 5-for-7 with eight RBIs as the Coyotes swept the College of Eastern Utah 10-0 and 10-0 at Morse Stadium.

Shreve (5-0) threw a one-hitter for College of Southern Nevada (18-7, 7-3 Scenic West Athletic Conference) in the second game. He took a no-hitter into the fifth.

In the opener, Lavigne (2-0) gave up five hits and no walks against Eastern Utah (5-18, 3-7).

Schlehuber went 3-for-3 with six RBIs and three runs in the second game after going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs in the first.

• CSN SOFTBALL -- The Coyotes (15-9, 10-4 SWAC) defeated Snow College 2-1 and 11-7 in Ephraim, Utah.

Mandy Tapia (8-6) pitched a complete game in the opener.

Evelyn Terrazas went 4-for-8 with two homers in the sweep.

Christina Jones (7-3) got the victory in the second game. She went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
