Tight end selects UNLV

UNLV received an oral commitment from one of two top-100 tight ends who made official visits over the weekend.

Alex Young (6 feet 5 inches, 225 pounds) of Central Catholic High School in Modesto, Calif., selected the Rebels over UNR and Air Force, both of which also offered scholarships.

D.J. Shields of Bonita Vista Senior High in Chula Vista, Calif., declined to commit.

"I liked how the whole coaching staff and football players were like a family," Young said Sunday. "A lot of schools, the head coach is the head of the whole team and might not interact with everybody. ... I liked the atmosphere a lot."

Young is rated by Scout.com as a two-star prospect.

He said he was disappointed with his trip to UNR, and decided against Air Force because of the five-year commitment to active duty after graduation.

The Rebels also picked up a commitment from safety Beau Orth (6-0, 201), a one-star prospect from Bishop Gorman.
