Infiniti Q50 3.0 twin-turbo V-6 named among 10 best engines of 2017

The new Infiniti Q50 sports sedan, powered by an optional 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V-6 engine, earned accolades and a spot among Ward’s “10 Best Engines of 2017.” The awards, presented Jan. 11, recognize the best automobile engines available in the U.S. as rated by Ward’s AutoWorld magazine.

The Infiniti 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine was selected to the prestigious list from 40 new or significantly improved powertrains that are compared alongside the 2016 engines. Only vehicles with a base price below $62,000 available in the U.S. are eligible for consideration.

This year was the first time in the history of the list that a V-8 was not included. The Infiniti VR-series joins seven other turbocharged V-6 engines, part of an industry trend in downsizing engine volume but adding turbo chargers to improve performance without sacrificing on fuel economy and efficiency.

Infiniti officials say the Q50’s new compact V-6 twin-turbo engine is the most advanced the brand has ever offered, striking an ideal balance between drivability, efficiency and performance.

“This new twin-turbo system enables smooth and immediate response under acceleration and ample power,” said Park Place Infiniti General Manager Rob Schweizer. “It makes the Q50 a genuinely fun car to drive, giving you the responsiveness of a performance sports car. Yet, as with all Infiniti models, the Q50 additionally provides excellent craftsmanship in both interior and exterior design and style.”

The 3.0-liter Twin-Turbo V-6 engine comes in two configurations, a 300-horsepower version and a high-performance option with 400 horsepower.

The 3.0-liter V-6 twin-turbo is from the exclusive VR-series powertrain family, born out of the brand’s long-standing heritage of V-6 powertrain production. The new engine has been engineered to empower the driver and offer increased power and torque and higher levels of efficiency than any comparable predecessors from the company.

Other car reviewers also have heaped on praise.

The Car Connection expert review, for instance, gives the 2017 Infiniti Q50 high marks for its overall styling, design and interior refinement, and also gives its hybrid model a nod for mileage efficiency.

“The 2017 Infiniti Q50 is an attractive sport sedan with good road feel,” according to Kirk Bell, Car Connection Expert Review editor. “We rate the Q50 above average in its luxury sport-sedan class. Everyday road manners border on brilliant, and new powertrains give it a much broader range of appeal.”

The 2017 Q50’s intelligent all-wheel drive. puts power to the wheels that need it by instantly adapting to changing conditions. When all-wheel drive is not needed, 100 percent of the power goes to the rear wheels for more responsive road performance.
