Government sues Tuscany hotel-casino over work documentation practices

Federal officials are suing a Las Vegas hotel-casino amid claims that the hotel was overzealous in verifying noncitizens' work documents.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced last week that it filed suit against Tuscany, which is east of the Strip.

The lawsuit claims Tuscany discriminated against noncitizens by asking them to provide more or different documents than required. The complaint also alleges the company performed unnecessary checks of their working status, and recorded the expiration date of noncitizens' green cards so it could reverify employment eligibility.

Thomas Perez of the justice department's civil rights division says it's illegal to treat authorized workers differently during the employment eligibility process based on their citizenship status.

A request for comment from Tuscany managers was not immediately returned.
