Unveilings begin at Plaza in downtown Las Vegas

The Plaza begins the first in a series of openings today, this one of the soft variety.

Some of the hotel's public areas, including the casino, will be ready for guests sometime in the late morning, without fanfare except for a bingo tournament. The hotel website lists rooms at $40.

The formal opening on Sept. 1 will include all guest rooms. Other elements, such as the Oscar's steakhouse, will start admitting customers in the ensuing weeks.

The hotel, at the west end of Fremont Street, was closed in November for a $35 million renovation. The project's scope was expanded by picking up furniture and fixtures from the bankrupt Fontainebleau at a discount.
