Fliers left more than $27K in loose change at McCarran last year

The next time you go through McCarran International Airport’s security check, you should check your bins and pockets. The Transportation Security Administration released its most recent fiscal report, which included “loose change,” or all the money left behind by passengers.

In the 2014 fiscal year, the TSA made about $675,000 and you don’t get it back. Exactly $27,676.71 of that came from McCarran.

The amount of change being left behind by passengers is growing, too, according to Huffington Post. In 2008, TSA collected $383,413, almost half of this year’s haul.

“TSA makes every effort to reunite passengers with items left at the checkpoint, however, there are instances where loose change or other items are left behind and unclaimed,” Ross Feinstein, the TSA press secretary, said.

New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport brought in the most dough — $42, 550.

In 2014, McCarran saw 42.9 million people through its gates. But don’t worry about going broke — if all of those fliers dropped an even amount of money, it would be less then a penny.

The TSA Loose Change Act, passed in 2013, requires that the money be donated to private charities for U.S. military members and their families.
