Injured Las Vegas officer in critical condition

A 54-year-old officer who police suspect was struck by a drunken driver last week while investigating a separate drunken driving accident was identified Tuesday as Tony McCleery, Las Vegas police said.

Police said McCleery, who is assigned to the department's Traffic Bureau, was in critical condition at University Medical Center. The motorcycle officer has been with the department since August 1993 .

McCleery was hospitalized Thursday morning with a skull fracture, a dislocated knee, a fractured vertebra, two broken ribs and a punctured lung, police said. He was thrown about 50 feet at
1:35 a.m. Thursday after a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado plowed into him on Las Vegas Boulevard South, near Town Square.

Brandon A. Potts, 42, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing substantial bodily harm.

Just before McCleery was hit, he was parked near the median of Las Vegas Boulevard investigating a single-vehicle crash involving a 2001 BMW. Police said a woman, who was later cited for DUI, had crashed the vehicle into the median and suffered minor injuries.

Police said McCleery's family has said he is making progress daily.
