Man shot and killed Saturday identified

Las Vegas police still have not determined what prompted a brazen daylight shooting Saturday that left one man dead and a woman wounded at the Evergreen Apartments, 5400 W. Cheyenne Avenue., near Michael Way.

The two were taking out the trash when they were shot, Las Vegas police Homicide Lt. Lew Roberts said.

"It's pretty pitiful," Roberts said. "It shows the suspect has no regard for human life. Unfortunately, we've seen these cases before."

The shooting might have been random, Roberts said.

The Clark County coroner's office identified the dead man Tuesday as Charles E. McCullough, 26, of Las Vegas. He died from multiple gunshot wounds, the coroner's office said.

The woman, who has not been identified by police, was shot in the lower leg. She was out of the hospital Tuesday afternoon.

Roberts said the victims, who he described as acquaintances, were visiting friends at the complex. He said at least 8 shots were fired by the suspect.

The shooting occurred after the victims were confronted by two men with whom they had argued, police said. Roberts said he is unsure what the argument was about.

He said police were chasing down "several" leads that had come in through the Crime Stoppers line, in which people can anonymously leave tips.

Roberts said the help from the community is good sign that shows people want to see the culprits arrested.

The shooter is described as a heavyset black man who stands 5 feet 8 inches tall and is between the ages of 23 and 24. He was last seen wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt, black jacket and white T-shirt. He and another black man were seen fleeing in either a silver or white small vehicle.

Roberts said, if arrested, both men will face the recommended charges of murder.

Anyone with information about the slaying is urged to call the Las Vegas police Homicide Section at 828-3521 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
