The man accused in a shooting incident Saturday on the Las Vegas Strip made his first appearance in court Wednesday morning.

Rolando Cardenas, 55, is accused of fatally shooting a tourist and wounding another man on a bus in front of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Saturday morning. During the suspect’s brief court appearance, a preliminary hearing was scheduled for April 27.

Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Cynthia Cruz said a request to set bail for Cardenas needed to be submitted in writing.

Gary Breitling, 57, of Sidney, Montana, was fatally shot while getting off the bus. He was sitting toward the front of the bus with his wife.

Cardenas faces charges of open murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon, burglary while in possession of a firearm and discharging a gun within a vehicle. He told Las Vegas police he fired the gun to scare a large man who sat next to him and threatened him.

The shooting prompted an hourslong standoff with the SWAT team.

Attorney General Aaron Ford said Nevada will be receiving upwards of $6 million in the settlement relating to allegations of “deceptive trade practices.”
