Suspect shot after robbery still at UMC
The man shot after a robbery at a southwest valley bar remained at University Medical Center on Friday, and police said they will not seek charges against the bartender who shot him.
Douglas Shaughnessy, 30, will face several charges, including robbery with a deadly weapon, when released from the hospital, but he is currently recovering from two gunshot wounds to his chest and wounds to his arm and hand.
Las Vegas police believe Shaughnessy donned a mask and armed himself with a stolen handgun before he walked into The Lodge at 5790 S. Fort Apache Road at about 6 a.m. Thursday. He placed a black bag on the bar and demanded money from the bartender, according to his arrest report. He left with $337.
The bartender, Christopher Housley, 38, followed him outside to record Shaughnessy's license plate, the report states, then drew a handgun of his own and told Shaughnessy to "drop it." Shaughnessy froze but raised his arm, Housley told police. Fearing he would be killed, the bartender fired several times at Shaughnessy. Investigators counted nine spent shell casings on the ground. Shaughnessy was hit four times.
The report states that video surveillance confirmed Housley's version of events. Attempts to reach Housley, who has a concealed weapons permit for his pistol, were not successful Friday.
When officers arrived on the scene, a wounded Shaughnessy told one of them, "I'm stupid, I robbed the place and got shot," the report states.
Shaughnessy is a convicted felon who has served time in prison. He was convicted for conspiracy to violate the controlled substance act in 2002.
Once he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges including burglary with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of stolen property and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
