Tax preparer pleads guilty to obstructing IRS

A Las Vegas tax preparer pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to obstructing Internal Revenue Service laws.

Rafael A. Aguirre, 45, who ran Aguirre Tax Services, and his employees prepared about 65 fraudulent returns resulting in a tax loss to the IRS of at least $209,657, Nevada U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden said.

Aguirre, who pleaded guilty to one count of obstructing the administration of IRS laws, is to be sentenced before Senior U.S. District Judge Lloyd George on Aug. 9. Aguirre faces a maximum three years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to his plea agreement, Aguirre and his employees significantly overstated various deductions, including those for sales taxes, mortgage interest, business expenses, charitable contributions and gambling losses. His clients got tax refunds they weren't entitled to receive.
