1 man dead after shooting in downtown Las Vegas

A man was shot and killed Tuesday morning in downtown Las Vegas, police said.

The homicide occurred in the 1500 block of Ogden Avenue, near 15th Street, Metropolitan Police Department Lt. David Gordon said.

Neighbors said they heard arguing and then gunshots before finding the man outside with a gunshot wound to his head and neck area. One witness reported seeing the man walking by himself before the shooting, Metro homicide Lt. Dan McGrath said.

Shari Butler, who lives in a building near Ogden Avenue and 15th Street, said she walked outside and saw a body in the road near the intersection. She said she had not heard gunshots but noted the heavy police presence.

“I just walked out and everything was — ” she said, gesturing at the several officers behind the crime tape.

Arriving medical personnel tried to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A man who lives at another nearby apartment complex said he was arriving home about 7 a.m. and heard what he said sounded like a single gunshot.

“It scared the pigeons,” said the man, who declined to provide his name.

But he said he did not think much of it and went inside.

He later went outside to take out the trash about 8:15 a.m. and saw police had taped off the area.

Police are looking for at least two people who may have fled in a small brown sedan, McGrath said. A neighbor’s security camera, a security camera at a nearby 7-Eleven store and street cameras will be reviewed for further details, police said.

“He does not look like a gang member,” McGrath said about the victim. “That’s my observation.”
