Boy, 12, held in shooting death of sibling in Henderson

Updated January 26, 2024 - 7:18 pm

A 12-year-old boy is in custody after police say he shot and killed his 14-year-old sibling Thursday night in Henderson.

According to Henderson police, the shooting was reported around 7:15 p.m. on the 1000 block of Capital Gains Drive.

The 14-year-old was identified Friday evening as Aizeya Reyes of Henderson. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest and abdomen, according to the Clark County coroner’s office.

While en route, officers were told that the victim was taken by family to a local area hospital, where the victim was later pronounced dead.

The 12-year-old was taken into custody and booked into Clark County Juvenile Hall on one count of open murder. The courts do not release the names of juveniles unless they are certified to be tried as adults.

Family law attorney Louis Schneider said that under Nevada law, a 12-year-old cannot be charged as an adult, even in a murder case. Juveniles who are convicted could be held in custody until they are 21, he said.

“I’ve had 12-year-olds charged with shootings, but I’ve never had anyone charged with murder at 12 years old,” Schneider said.

Late last year, a 13-year-old was one of nine teenagers arrested on murder charges in connection with the fatal beating of a Rancho High School student. The 13-year-old’s case will stay in the juvenile court system until a judge holds a hearing to determine if he will be certified as an adult.

Three people standing outside a home on Capital Gains Drive on Friday afternoon said they had no idea what happened and said they learned of the shooting from news reports. They described the neighborhood, which is housed in a gated community near Wigwam Parkway and Stephanie Street, as quiet but declined to comment further.

No signs of a crime scene or investigation were visible on the street.

The shooting is being investigated as the city’s first homicide this year.
