Coroner rules death of Las Vegas baby a homicide

Updated October 23, 2018 - 6:17 pm

The Clark County coroner’s office has determined the October death of a nearly 2-year-old boy in the central Las Vegas Valley was a homicide.

Jaiden Michael Stewart died from blunt force trauma, and the Oct. 9 death was ruled a homicide, the coroner’s office said Tuesday afternoon.

Jaiden, who was 1 year, 11 months old, died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center after he was found in cardiac arrest on the 700 block of East Twain Avenue, near Swenson Street, Las Vegas police have said.

A Metropolitan Police Department spokesman said on Oct. 9 that homicide detectives were not requested to the scene after police received reports of a 1-year-old boy in cardiac arrest just after 9:20 a.m.

Further information about Jaiden’s death or possible arrests was not immediately available.

A Clark County Department of Family Services reports shows that the agency had no prior reports regarding the baby or his family. The report said the baby was being watched by an adult caregiver at the time of the 911 call, and there were no prior reports related to that person.

The family services department opened an investigation and family assessment for the case, the report said.

This case marks the 176th homicide investigated in the county this year, and the 136th under Metro’s jurisdiction, according to records kept by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
