Homeless woman shot, killed Saturday night, police say

Updated August 20, 2023 - 2:10 pm

A homeless woman was shot dead in East Las Vegas Saturday night, according to Las Vegas police.

After reports of a shooting just before 10 p.m., the woman, who was in her 30s, was found by police shot inside a tent at a homeless encampment on the Flamingo Arroyo Trail, near Sloan Lane and Sahara Avenue. After medical personnel arrived, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lt. Jason Johansson said.

Johansson said a man was seen by witnesses entering the tent before the shooting, then leaving afterward and fleeing west.

The investigation by Metro’s homicide section indicated Sunday that the victim was involved in an argument with the suspect and was later shot.

Johansson said the man was known by the victim and other members of the homeless community, and police believe the killing was not random.

The identification of the victim, as well as the cause and manner of death, will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office.
