Man flees northwest valley traffic stop, later found dead

A man who fled from Las Vegas police during a traffic stop Friday morning died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Officers discovered the man asleep in his vehicle around 1:27 a.m. on the 3800 block of East Lake Mead Boulevard with a handgun and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department.

When police attempted to speak to the man he woke up and drove off. Officers later found the man pull his vehicle into a convenience store on the 4400 block of North Jones Boulevard, more than 12 miles away, where the man ran into the bathroom, police said.

The store clerk told police he left when he heard a gunshot in the bathroom, and officers pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to the statement.

The man will be identified by the Clark County coroner’s office after his family is notified.
