Slain man’s family after suspect shot dead: ‘I’m still numb’

A man wanted in connection with a February fatal shooting was killed early Saturday after he entered a central valley apartment armed and was shot by one of its residents, Las Vegas police confirmed Wednesday.

On Feb. 15, Trevon Roland, 24, was shot dead on the 4500 block of East Karen, and the case surrounding the father-of-three’s death was closed Tuesday — the day the coroner’s office identified the man killed Saturday as Lacy Howard, 44, the same man named as a suspect in Roland’s death.

“I really had no reaction,” Roland’s brother, Leroy, 30, said Wednesday — a day after a Metropolitan Police Department detective gave his mother the news. “I’m still numb to the fact my brother’s gone.”

Howard was killed just after 3 a.m. Saturday inside a unit at the Shelter Island apartment complex on the 3700 block of Swenson Street, near the Twain Avenue intersection. Police said Howard entered the apartment and was confronted by two people inside who were also armed but did not know Howard before shots rang out.

During the fatal shooting, Howard was able to fire at one of the residents, but that resident wasn’t seriously injured.

Howard was convicted in 1994 of one count of attempted robbery with a deadly weapon and three counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, court records show. He was sentenced to 15 years prison.

His death was the 37th homicide Metro investigated this year. Roland’s was the 19th.
