Las Vegas police hunting for woman who hit 4 youths with vehicle
Four youths suffered superficial injuries when they were struck by a vehicle in a parking lot in southern Las Vegas Friday afternoon, and police were trying to determine if the driver acted intentionally or if it was an accident.
Las Vegas police spokesman Larry Hadfield said “there was some sort of altercation or fight” at approximately 2:20 p.m. in an alley at South Jack Leavitt Street and East LeBaron Avenue, near Maryland Parkway and Silverado Ranch Boulevard. A woman was involved in the altercation and, as she was driving away, her vehicle struck the youths, Hadfield said.
“She then left the area,” Hadfield said.
None of the injuries were life-threatening, Hadfield said. Police said they were trying to identify and locate the driver as of Friday evening. A large congregation of officers were later observed behind crime scene tape in the alley to the rear of an Albertsons, 9725 S. Maryland Parkway. The scene is near Silvestri Junior High School.
Ron and Sherry Lawrence said their 14-year-old granddaughter was one of the kids struck. The girl suffered bruises to her leg. They said she and other witnesses told them that a woman got into a fistfight with a boy in the alley shortly after a group of kids got out of Silvestri. The woman then jumped in her vehicle and fled the scene when the youths were struck.
“She punched the kid in the face, got back in her car and ran over four other children, and left the scene,” Ron Lawrence said.
The episode was the second involving a minor struck by a vehicle in the Las Vegas Valley on Friday.
Henderson police said at 7:30 a.m., a youth was struck by a vehicle in the area of Carnegie Street and Cozy Hill Circle, near Bob Miller Middle School. That youth was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver in that case remained at the scene, and impairment was not suspected.
