A suicidal man had barricaded himself inside his apartment when police arrived and had started a small fire, said Metro Deputy Chief Branden Clarkson.
The individual was refusing to comply with officers, and the incident was declared a barricade. SWAT and crisis negotiators arrived to the scene, according to a Metro email.
The suspect then came out of the apartment with apparently self-inflicted wounds.
Officers used several low-lethal devices to try and get the subject into custody even as he stabbed Enzo in the back several times.
Once in custody, the subject was taken to University Medical Center and also underwent surgery, police said. He was last reported in critical condition.
Enzo was airlifted to a veterinary trauma hospital for treatment, Clarkson said, noting the dog was in stable condition after surgery and is expected to recover. He will remain in intensive care overnight, Metro said in a news release.
Enzo is a Belgian Malinois and almost three years old. He has been with Metro for approximately one year.
