North Las Vegas police arrest man suspected in sword attack

Updated September 18, 2017 - 6:03 pm

North Las Vegas police arrested a man on Saturday wanted in connection with an early September sword attack.

James McCanna, 39, was booked into the Las Vegas City Jail on charges including battery with the use of a deadly weapon, mayhem with a deadly weapon and grand larceny, the Police Department said.

About 6:30 a.m. Sept. 4, officers were called to the 4700 block of North Rancho Drive for reports of a man suffering from critical injuries. The 33-year-old victim was taken to University Medical Center’s trauma unit, the Police Department said in a statement.

In their investigation, police found that the incident started on the 3400 block of Verde Way, when the victim and McCanna began arguing. McCanna then pulled out a sword and hit the victim multiple times. Police have said the two men knew each other.

McCanna fled the scene before police arrived, the department said.

Someone took the victim from the home to a gas station near Rancho Drive and Lone Mountain Road and officers were called, police said.

Police arrested McCanna Saturday near Centennial Parkway and Revere Drive, the department said.
