1 dead, 1 critically injured in northwest Las Vegas shooting

Updated December 9, 2017 - 9:02 pm

One man died and another is in critical condition after a shooting outside of a home Saturday afternoon in the northwest valley, Las Vegas police said.

Metropolitan Police Department responded about 3:20 p.m. on reports that two people had been shot at a residence on the 4100 block of Overbrook Drive, near Rainbow Boulevard and Alexander Road, Lt. Patricia Cervantes said.

Officers found one man in the driveway and another inside the house, each suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Metro Lt. Dan McGrath said. Both men were in their early 20s and were shot in the driveway,. One of the men ran inside before collapsing.

Both men were shot three times, McGrath said. They were taken to University Medical Center, where one died and another remained in critical condition Saturday evening, he said.

“A very high level of violence, you know, in shooting in daylight,” McGrath said. “A lot of kids around, too, so we’re going to do our best to get this person as quick as we can.”

There were four teens outside playing basketball who heard the gunshots. They spotted the suspected shooter running from the scene, looking back a few times as he ran, McGrath said.

Police interviewed them as witnesses and tried to make them feel comfortable, he said, adding officers kept them warm.

“We only have one chance to do this,” McGrath said of investigating the scene.

McGrath said the shooting appeared targeted, but the relationship between the shooter and the men shot wasn’t immediately clear.

A neighbor’s security footage captured the suspected shooter walking in and out of the neighborhood in a matter of minutes, McGrath said.

The shooter, believed to be in his late teens, was at large as of Saturday night.

On Saturday evening, tape wrapped around a palm tree and stretched across Atrium Avenue to a mailbox on the other side of the street. Within the taped-off area sat Bill Haas’ home, which faces Overbrook. After police had broken down the tape, officers could be seen shining their flashlights in the driveway where the two men were shot.

Leaning up against a pickup truck inside his garage, Haas recalled hearing gunshots while sitting on his couch.

“I just heard ‘pop, pop,’” he said. “Sounded like a firecracker went off.”

The Clark County coroner’s office will identify the deceased once his family is notified of his death.

The death marks the 237th homicide investigated within Clark County and the 207th homicide investigated by Metro this year, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal statistics, which include deadly police shootings and the 58 people killed in the Oct. 1 mass shooting.
