Las Vegas police shoot, kill man at Summerlin house

Updated September 7, 2020 - 7:08 am

A Las Vegas police officer fatally shot a man who was stabbing a woman at a Summerlin home Sunday evening, police said.

No officers were injured in the shooting, which happened about 9:10 p.m. near the 10300 block of Timber Willow Avenue, near Sahara Avenue and Hualapai Way, police said.

During a Sunday night press briefing, Capt. Nichole Splinter said officers arrived at the house just after 9 p.m. in response to a domestic dispute call and heard a woman screaming. They found a man “causing lacerations” to the woman.

Police later said the man was attacking the woman with a knife.

An officer fired one shot through a screen door and the man fell. Splinter said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to University Medical Center with “numerous lacerations.” Police later said she was in stable condition.

A child was also in the home at the time of the shooting, Splinter said. The child was not hurt.

The event was the 14th officer-involved shooting in Metro’s jurisdiction this year. The identity of the officer will be released after 48 hours, per Metro’s policy.

The Clark County coroner’s office will release the man’s name and cause of death after relatives have been notified.
