Man killed in shooting near Henderson shopping center

Updated December 7, 2024 - 3:51 pm

A man was shot and killed near a Henderson shopping center in what Henderson police were calling a possible self-defense shooting.

In a news release, the Henderson Police Department said around 8:51 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a shooting in the 500 block of Marks Street.

According to police, who said the information was preliminary, detectives determined that two vehicles had pulled into the lot after one driver believed the other had hit his car.

The two men began getting out of their vehicles. One, who was 55, displayed a gun in his waistband, prompting the other, who was 42 and also armed, to shoot him, police said.

Despite lifesaving efforts by officers and paramedics, the 55-year-old man died at the scene, police said.

No other injuries were reported, according to police. The man who fired his gun stayed at the scene afterward. Officers said that he was cooperating with the investigation.

Detectives were investigating the killing as possibly being self-defense, the news release said. No arrests had been made, police said Saturday.

It wasn’t clear from police where exactly the shooting took place, but the 500 block of Marks Street includes the Eastgate Plaza shopping center, which includes a Walmart Supercenter. Police said in the news release that they received multiple 911 calls about a shooting involving two men “in the parking lot of the shopping center.”

A man was killed in the parking lot of the Walmart in the 500 block of Marks Street in June. Otis Watson, 38, was shot after threatening a car with a gun, police said. A person in that car fired at Watson, who also shot his weapon, before driving off. Police said that the shooting appeared to be a case of self-defense.

The Clark County coroner’s office will release the identity of the man who was killed Friday.

It was the tenth homicide in Henderson in 2024, police said.
