Man shot in North Las Vegas road rage refused to end pursuit

Updated September 26, 2017 - 4:36 pm

The man arrested in North Las Vegas after a road rage shooting stole the shooter’s phone and refused to stop following his vehicle, according to his arrest report.

The 24-year-old man who rear-ended and later shot David Rosengrant-Muñoz, 18, told police he feared for his life when he fled the scene of the fender bender.

Rosengrant-Muñoz called 911 on Sept. 20 and told police he was following a Honda sedan that rear-ended his BMW coupe on Cheyenne Avenue at Martin Luther King Boulevard, according to the report. A call taker told him to stop following, but Rosengrant-Muñoz refused.

The Honda’s driver and two other witnesses at the crash scene said Rosengrant-Muñoz got out of his car after the crash, then pointed a gun at him and several others who were watching. The man said Rosengrant-Muñoz grabbed his iPhone, headphones and charger while he demanded the man’s insurance information, according to the report.

Witnesses took video of the exchange, and said Rosengrant-Muñoz tried to grab the man and pull him from the car, the report states. When he let go, the man sped off with Rosengrant-Muñoz in pursuit.

The Honda’s driver drove toward a nearby neighborhood, where he said one of his relatives lived, but parked outside because the gate was closed, according to the report.

The man told police that he could see the barrel of a gun pointed toward him as Rosengrant-Muñoz pulled up behind him, so he grabbed his own gun off the dashboard.

Rosengrant-Muñoz was still on the phone with 911 when the man opened fire, striking him in the mouth and chest. He told the call taker he had been shot near Revere Street and Dega Drive.

Rosengrant-Muñoz was taken to University Medical Center for treatment.

The man who shot him fled the scene and jumped the gate to enter the neighborhood. He later flagged down police, put his gun on the ground and surrendered. As of Tuesday, he is not facing charges in the shooting.

Rosengrant-Muñoz was booked in absentia at the Clark County Detention Center the following day, but is out on bond. He faces one count each of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery and pointing a gun at a human being.
