Man shot, killed by trooper in northeast Las Vegas Valley

Updated October 3, 2021 - 4:17 pm

A man was shot and killed by a Nevada Highway Patrol officer on Sunday morning, trooper Travis Smaka said.

Officers responded to a domestic battery in a gray Toyota Corolla on Lake Mead Boulevard, near Los Feliz Street, shortly before 8 a.m., Smaka said, as witnesses reported seeing a man strike a woman in the car.

Troopers pursued the car, and later in the morning, at 8:26 a.m., a man was shot near mile marker 11 of Lake Mead Boulevard. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Smaka did not say what led to the shooting. At least two dozen officers responded to the scene.

Lake Mead was closed between Arnona and Pabco roads until 4:45 p.m.

Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Brian Boxler said Las Vegas police were assisting with the investigation, but the highway patrol would be the lead agency.

More information is expected to be released in the next 72 hours, Smaka said.
