Threat report preceded armed man’s shooting by Las Vegas police officer

Before Carlos Ibarra was shot by a Las Vegas police officer Monday, he allegedly threatened his ex-wife with a handgun and gave her an ultimatum: “Choose you or one of the kids, and I’m gonna take it to the end.”

The woman told police she thought that meant he was going to kill them, Ibarra’s arrest report shows.

At a news briefing Wednesday, Assistant Sheriff Tom Roberts said officers who arrived at the apartment complex at 9552 W. Tropicana Ave. about 1 a.m. in response to calls from Ibarra’s ex-wife and son encountered the intoxicated suspect in the parking lot. According to Roberts and body cam video played at the briefing, the officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and repeatedly told him to drop the gun.

But when he moved to point the weapon at one of the officers, Officer Travon Chambers, 23, fired once, hitting Chambers in the chest, Roberts said. The Metropolitan Police Department identified Chambers Wednesday morning in a news release and stated he was placed on paid administrative leave pending conclusion of the investigation.

Ibarra, 43, was treated and remains hospitalized at University Medical Center. He was booked in absentia at the county jail. No officers or family members were injured.

The handgun turned out to be a pellet gun that resembled a pistol, Ibarra’s arrest report shows.

Ibarra pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor domestic battery charge in 2011 in Las Vegas, according to court records.

Ibarra’s arrest report said he also was wanted on a California warrant for failure to appear by a sex offender, but Roberts said Wednesday that the department was not sure that was the case.
