Concerts, theater productions on tap for Las Vegas’ summer

A series of concerts and theater for children of all ages will be presented by the city of Las Vegas July 12-Aug. 1 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center and the downtown Historic Fifth Street School.

Tickets, which are on sale, are priced at $3 for each of the four events. Tickets can be purchased online at www.artslasvegas.org or by calling 229-6383 or 229-3515. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more.

The Paul Mesner Puppets will perform "True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by A. Wolf" at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. July 12, at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St. The company has a reputation of offering elaborate productions with witty scripts, based on classic fairy tales and contemporary children's literature.

In 2008, this production received the highest honor in U.S. puppetry, the Union Internationale de la Marionette-USA Citation for Excellence in Puppetry, an award created by Jim Henson. Meredith LeVande brings her Monkey Monkey Band to the Charleston Heights Arts Center Theatre, 800 S. Brush St., on July 18 for performances at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Since 2011, when public television stations began airing Monkey Monkey music videos, children from New York to Los Angeles have grown to love LeVande and her high-energy songs that educate and entertain. Alex & The Kaleidoscope Band will bring its multicultural, award-winning music to the Historic Fifth Street School on July 26, for 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. performances. Audiences of all ages will enjoy their lively and interactive songs about relationships, emotions and the natural world. Everyone sings, claps and dances with the band, which includes guitar, bass, drums and a jazz vocalist who leads the children in movement and dance. The Magik Theatre of San Antonio, Texas, will present "The Jungle Book" at the Charleston Heights Arts Center Theatre Aug. 1 in performances at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Adapted from Rudyard Kipling's source stories by David Morgan, with music by Jaime Ramirez, the familiar story of jungle boy Mowgli, and his friends panther Bagheera and great bear Baloo, will come to life on the stage.
