Contemporary Arts Center celebrates 25-year anniversary

Summer 2013 will be extra sweet for one local downtown arts institution — the Contemporary Arts Center, which is celebrating 25 years of serving the Las Vegas community through the arts.

The organization began in August 1989 when a group of artists, students and instructors from UNLV’s fine art department came together to provide a venue for emerging artists to share ideas and concepts. Although this August marks the official start of the anniversary, the celebration kicks off earlier in the summer with several family-friendly events.

Annual Juried Show

This exhibition is a prominent showcase in the region and highlights the exceptional work of national and international emerging artists. The exhibition is held through July 6 in the Contemporary Arts Center’s main gallery in the Arts Factory at 17 E. Charleston Blvd.

89XXXhibition

Contemporary Arts Center and Yelp have teamed up to organize the 89XXXhibition, a 10-day celebration starting June 6, which is “Preview Thursday” in the 18b Las Vegas Arts District.

Participating venues include Arts Factory, Insert Coin(s), Vanguard Lounge, Beauty Bar Las Vegas, Theatre7, Gaia Flowers, El Cortez, Lil Art Bodega, Art Street Deli, ActionRED, Get Up Gallery, Photo Bang Bang, Mingo Kitchen and Mundo.

Older and Overwhelmed

Installation artist Sam Blanchard focuses on everyday rituals, such as the morning commute, to create hybrids of sculpture, performance and video from July 12 to Sept. 7. Ladders, barber chairs, stacks of paper and polo shirts are among the materials he uses to create a fresh context in the bare canvas of the main gallery.
