‘Ka’ conductor’s musical set for Broadway run

All roads lead to Vegas.

But those roads run in two directions — and some of them lead to Broadway.

That's the case for Richard Oberacker, whose "day job" finds him conducting Cirque du Soleil's "Ka" at the MGM Grand.

But Oberacker has another creative identity: creator of musicals.

Including "The Bandstand," which will head to Broadway during the 2016-17 season following a successful, just-concluded production at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse. The theater has been a proving ground for previous musicals, from "Newsies" to "Honeymoon in Vegas."

Oberacker composed the score and collaborated on the book and lyrics with Robert Taylor; another Oberacker-Taylor musical, "ACE," debuted in concert form in an August staging presented by Nevada Conservatory Theatre at UNLV.

But back to "The Bandstand."

A big-band musical set in 1945, "The Bandstand" focuses on mismatched World War II veterans competing in a radio contest — and dreaming of musical stardom — while dealing with war's lingering traumas.

Paper Mill "Bandstand" leads Laura Osnes and Corey Cott will reprise their roles in the Broadway production.

So will "The Bandstand's" director and choreographer: "In the Heights" Tony-winner Andy Blankenbuehler, who also choreographed the current Broadway smash "Hamilton."

Blankenbuehler also directed and choreographed the touring "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" production that played The Smith Center in January.

And speaking of The Smith Center, Tony nominee Osnes ("Cinderella") sang at The Smith Center's gala opening in March 2012, returned last New Year's Eve for a Reynolds Hall concert headlined by Michael Feinstein — and is set to play the center's Cabaret Jazz Dec. 11 and 12.
