Harvest Midwest flavors

The tastes of home hold a lot of allure for most of us, and that's apparently the case for Candace Geronilla, who's looking for two Midwestern favorites: breaded pork tenderloin and loose-meat "Maid-Rite"-style sandwiches. And once again, readers come to the rescue.

Karen Dawson said her favorite is the schnitzel-on-a-bun from Cafe Heidelberg, 610 E. Sahara Ave. ("They don't have yellow mustard there, so if you want that on your sandwich, bring your own," she advised.) Stacey Dawn Webster recommends Jillian's at 450 Fremont St., especially during Iowa Hawkeyes football season. Joe Yonkouski recommends the breaded pork tenderloin from Hash House A Go Go, 6800 W. Sahara Ave.

Damon Riley, general manager of the Hot Rod Grille, 1231 American Pacific Drive in Henderson, said one of the restaurant's owners is from Iowa and brought the regional favorite to Henderson, where it's the top-selling item, and that the grill also sells the Loose Caboose, "a loose-meat sandwich that is made right," as a regular special.

And Iowa native Christopher J. Phillips orders lots of three dozen Maid Rites at a time from the original Taylor's Maid Rite in Marshalltown, Iowa, at www.maidrite.com (or call 641-753-9684). ...

For Poppy Johnston, who's looking for white-cheddar-cheese-flavored Smartfood popcorn by Frito-Lay, Rick Hoffman e-mailed that he found it at Wal-Mart at 6464 N. Decatur Blvd. and Anne Hayes said it's available in 100-calorie packs at Smith's at 10100 W. Tropicana Ave. Peter Saldana, district sales manager for Frito-Lay, said if your store doesn't carry it, ask the grocery manager to get it. ...

For Sharon Chandler, who's looking for Emeril's Kicked-Up products, Cynthia LeFore wrote to say she has found them at the 99 Cents Only store at 1435 W. Craig Road in North Las Vegas, and for Linda Hollis, who's looking for Ranch Style black-eyed peas with bacon, she suggested Food 4 Less and Mario's Westside Market, 1960 N. Martin Luther King Blvd. ...

For David Wells, who's looking for a bakery that makes good cinnamon rolls, Marie Villareale e-mailed to suggest Great Buns Bakery, 8320 W. Sahara Ave. or 3270 E. Tropicana Ave. ...

And for the apple fritters Wells also is seeking, Ethel Dubuc wrote to recommend those sold at Master Donuts, 2300 E. Desert Inn Road, suggesting readers call first (796-1790) to ask that some be saved, because "they go fast and I do mean very fast." ...

Reader requests: Wendy Reis is looking for a local source for mustard pickles. ...

Goldie Saffer is looking for Del Monte 100 Percent Juice Tropical Fruit Salad. ...

Di Schellace is looking for Ronzoni tubettini pasta. ...

Valerie Trice is looking for Cav. Guiseppe Cocco brand No. 47 farfalloni, imported from Italy, which is bow-tie pasta that's 2 inches long. ...

And Tiffany Jones is looking for a restaurant that serves turtle soup.
