Via Brasil Steakhouse

We’ve had a number of Brazilian steakhouses/churrascarias in Las Vegas over the years, and about the only thing most of them have had in common, besides a loose (some looser than others) interpretation of the concept, is that most have been in the tourism corridor.

Readers find source for Wyler’s drink mix

We’ve had a relatively mild June so far — if a little uncharacteristically gloomy — but we don’t need summer’s official beginning last weekend to remind us that plenty of sizzling days are yet to come, and with them the need for refreshment. So it’s fitting that readers have a local source for an old favorite — Wyler’s Sugar-Free Lemonade Drink Mix, being sought by Julie and Don McCuiston.

The Grape

The Grape surprised us in two ways: We expected better wine and worse food.

THE LATEST
Deli-sliced Krakus ham available

This week brings good news and bad news on Krakus hams, being sought by John MacMillan and Helen Panegasser: Yes, the deli-sliced Krakus is available in Las Vegas. No, the canned hams don’t appear to be. John Bisci Jr., Delores Sullins, Marlene Peters, Barbara Jo Pfeffer, Judy Kackley, Jeff Wheeler, Connie Benton, Raymond Moreton and Lois Kupec all said the sliced-to-order ham is available in the deli section of various Albertsons stores. …

Tinoco’s Kitchen

Someday, somebody’s going to discover Enrique Tinoco and set him up in a restaurant on the Strip.

Readers hip to fried zucchini

In a month or so gardeners in other parts of the country will be trying to get rid of a surfeit of zucchini, but that’s one problem we don’t have in the desert. Still, there’s clearly a lot of interest in the squash; when Dean B. Pomerantz asked for suggestions for restaurants that serve long, thin, battered and fried zucchini, readers were all over it.

Simon Restaurant & Lounge

There’s no disputing that Simon Restaurant & Lounge at Palms Place is gorgeous. There’s no disputing that its target market skews young and hip; the energetic soundtrack, pool right beyond the windows (and I mean right beyond) and Palms-compound location are about as obvious as it gets. And we know executive chef Kerry Simon likes to play with his food; witness the cotton candy and Rice Krispie treats on his menu.

Costco brings back elusive Caspers dogs

If there’s anything I’ve learned in nearly 10 years of writing the Taste of the Town column, it’s that readers love their hot dogs — their specific brands of hot dogs. And with grilling season in full swing, it’s only right that a local source for Caspers hot dogs has been found for Jennifer Esposito and others. Bob Swantek, Susan Raffa, Van Bohrer and Connie Hannon all said they’re back in Costco stores, with Swantek speculating that they may be a seasonal item. …

Don Antonio’s

Housing prices continue their big, splashy and painful cannonball, and job security is an oxymoron, but a hermit wouldn’t have known any of that if he’d come out of his hovel to observe Don Antonio’s on a recent weeknight.

Grapples can be found all over valley

Grapples — apples that taste like grapes — are indeed available in local stores, readers assure Jean Lappin, although she may want to wait a while to get the best of the crop.

Cafe Heidelberg

This would fall under the category of evidence that’s purely anecdotal — maybe even intuitive — but it may be that our economy is beginning to rebound, if only just a little. The clue: It’s been a while since I’ve seen an empty restaurant even on a weeknight.
