Readers hip to finding cool drinks

With the mercury rising on our outdoor thermometers, many people are looking for something cool to drink, so this week's Readers Helping Readers offers refreshing news.

In response to a query from Marilyn Davis, readers e-mailed to say Diet Vernor's Ginger Ale can be found in many local supermarkets, but they pointed out that it's in the liquor aisle, not near the soft drinks.

John Bergler, Sharon Roybal, Ari Sobel, Colleen Sams, Heidi Janesin and Eric Blum suggested Albertsons. Mary Fussner and Roberta Braun suggested Vons. Judy Cvetkovic and Toby Schuller suggested Smart and Final. Bergler said he also has bought it at Smith's, and Jerry Meloy suggested Wal-Mart. ...

For Mary O'Shaughnessy, who is looking for ginger beer, Mark and Jill Melone and Betty Dakdduk said they get it at Trader Joe's. Tom Linder of Cedar City, Utah, and John Wirtz said they get it at Lee's Discount Liquors. Wirtz also suggested Cost Plus World Market. Katie Gray said she gets it at Target. And Diana Starkus of Whole Foods Market at 100 S. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson said her store carries it; there's another Whole Foods at 8855 W. Charleston Blvd. Starkus said she also has seen it at Julie Anne's Fine Foods, Bakery & Cafe at 10895 S. Eastern Ave. in Henderson. ...

Also for Davis, Starkus said Whole Foods has fresh whole-wheat pasta. ...

For Howard Ginsburg, Blum said reasonably priced sour pickles can be found in the refrigerated section at Albertsons. The brand name, he said, is Bubbe's, "which, by the way, will be the closest he will ever find to the old homemade kosher sour dills." And Sobel e-mailed that Ba Tampte Sour Pickles can be found at Albertsons stores throughout the valley and in the kosher section at Smith's at 2211 N. Rampart Blvd. "The older the date on the bottle, the more sour they'll be," he said. "You might have to give up a few fingers, but at least you get the flavor." ...

For Mary Ann LaGrossa, Sams, Sobel and Joseph Schaake said Gravy Master is available at Albertsons. Schaake noted it's in either the gravy or condiment section. ...

And for Jeffrey Joseph, Blum said 5-pound Hebrew National salamis can be found at Bagel Cafe, 301 N. Buffalo Drive. ...

Reader requests: Janesin is looking for Diet Canada Dry, Shasta or Seagram's Pale Ginger Ale, adding, "Vernor's is a little too sweet for me."

Blum is looking for a local source for Wino brand kosher salami. ...

Wirtz is looking for fresh-roasted Virginia redskin jumbo peanuts. ...

Karen Burns is looking for Quaker Oat Bran cereal. ...

Robert Morcom is looking for fresh lekvar (prune), apricot and poppy-seed filling, and premade pizza shells. ...

Bill Reese is looking for frozen Icelandic haddock. ...

Bill Tomany is looking for canned beef or chicken tamales in individual servings. ...

Patti Lindsay is looking for sorrel. ...

And Robert Dippner is looking for Milwaukee Pumpernickel bread, which he ate while growing up in San Francisco.
