Sweetbreads plentiful in valley

What's the difference between sweetbreads and sweet bread? Eons, if you're unaware and mistake one for the other. The latter is suitable for breakfast and usually contains nuts. The former is the thymus gland (and sometimes pancreas) of a lamb, calf or pig, and when properly prepared, they're a whole lot better than they sound.

And for M.C. Mills, who's looking for a store that sells sweetbreads in small quantities of a pound or two, readers say they're readily available in Las Vegas.

Patrick Smith e-mailed that Vons at 820 S. Rampart Blvd. in Boca Park carries them in its frozen-meat section. Dean B. Pomerantz e-mailed that he has found them at Rincon de Buenos Aires, 5300 Spring Mountain Road, and Liborio Market, 930 N. Lamb Blvd., and has seen them at King Ranch Market, which has multiple locations in the valley (he suggested calling ahead, and noted that in Spanish they're called mollejas or mollejas de res).

And Chris Jensen of Village Meat & Wine, 5025 S. Eastern Ave., and Ron Lutz of The Butcher Block, 7625 S. Rainbow Blvd., said they both carry them. ...

For Judy Norton, who's looking for Carroll Shelby's Chili mix, Colleen Sams, Geralynn DesSert, Idele Kaplan and Laura Karaer suggested various Albertsons stores; DesSert and Judy Myers suggested Smith's; and Marlene Patrick suggested Wal-Mart Supercenters and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets. Most of them, plus Van and Karen Bohrer, noted that the packaging has changed and Norton should be looking for, instead of the small paper bag, a box with a "Chili Kit" logo on the front. ...

For Lori Weir, who's looking for garlic juice, Smith said it's available "in a convenient spray bottle -- great for grilling" at Larry's Great Western Meats, 420 S. Valley View Blvd. ...

More on olive salad for muffuletta sandwiches: Dave Martin e-mailed that Jason's Deli at 1000 S. Rampart Blvd. in Boca Park sells it; there are multiple Jason's locations in the valley. ...

More on Smucker's currant jelly: Terry Tefertiller said she found it at Vons at 4610 W. Sahara Ave. ...
