Taste of the Town: Home Pride Bread available again

Ah, the vagaries of the corporate world and the still-struggling economy. It appears, as reader Rob Lindley pointed out, that the Home Pride bread that Dennis Hughes was seeking had temporarily disappeared from supermarket shelves because of the financial problems of parent company Hostess, but has since been bought by Flowers Foods.

Katherine Fox, Alan Van Ees and Joan Padilla emailed that Home Pride is once again available at Smith’s stores. Padilla also spotted it at Winco at 80 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson (there’s another Winco at 6101 N. Decatur Blvd.). Ilene Farr reported finding it at Sam’s Club, and Pearl Prunetta emailed that she found it at 99 Cents Only at 7239 Spring Mountain Road. …

Last week I reported that Joyce Hambacher was looking for fresh refrigerated apple cider, which she had previously found in her Smith’s store. Hambacher later emailed to say it had re-appeared in her store for the season (I also saw it at Smith’s at 4600 E. Sunset Road in Henderson), and Jill Petersen emailed to recommend the fresh-squeezed cider sold at Gilcrease Orchard, 7800 N. Tenaya Way. A check of the Gilcrease website showed that the orchard also offers apple-cider doughnuts and caramel apples. But note that the orchard will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, and then will close for the season until spring. …

For Farr and anyone else looking for green tomatoes, Joyce Plumer said those also are generally available at Gilcrease, but again, note that closing date. …

More on Taylor Pork Roll: Jim Rygiel emailed that the larger rolls that many East Coast natives are familiar with are available at Weiss Deli, which is at 2744 N. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson. And Dianne Poland of Pahrump said that although her Smith’s store stocks the 1-pound size, they’ll order the 3-pound rolls “for people like us who are addicted to it. Hopefully the Smith’s stores in Vegas will do the same.”

More on pastitsio: Robert Shulman emailed to add that Market Grille Cafe serves it. There are two locations, at 7175 W. Lake Mead Blvd. and 7070 N. Durango Drive. …

More on pappardelle: Chef Marc Sgrizzi emailed to say his Parma at 7591 W. Washington Ave. makes 20-millimeter fresh pappardelle, sold by weight.
