Taste of the Town: New Jersey-style pork roll a popular treat
October 29, 2013 - 10:24 pm
Wow.
Talk about a regional favorite. After I posted a query from Tony Thurber, looking for New Jersey-style pork roll, his fellow Taste of the Town readers responded en masse.
Karen and John Costa, Lois J. Savage, Michele Dates, Rich Torres, Gail Stivale, Ann DeMacedo, Lareen Lemin and Paula Rachlin all said they’d found it at various Smith’s stores. The brands seem to vary somewhat from store to store — Taylor or Case’s — and at most of the stores you can purchase a whole roll or have some sliced in the deli. Kathy Love and Howard Pratschler reported finding Taylor at Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road, and Dee Kline and Paulette Juryn found it at the commissary at Nellis Air Force Base, for those who have privileges. Macedo, who lives in St. George, Utah, said she also found it at Harmons Neighborhood Grocer.
And a few side notes: Savage added that she also finds Eastern favorites Lebanon bologna and scrapple at Smith’s at 10616 S. Eastern Ave., and Pratschler added, “If your readers would just camp outside of Glazier’s for anything from back East, they’d be ahead of the game. We make the trek from Bullhead City, Ariz., once a month.” …
More on kringle: Three readers took exception with the assertion in last week’s column that kringle isn’t available in Las Vegas. Mark Dushoff, Grith Nussbaumer and Kristine Petersen Maly all recommended Chef Flemming’s Bake Shop at 7 S. Water St. in Henderson, where it’s available on Danish Scandinavian Day, which is the first Saturday of each month, or by special order. Call 702-566-6500.
