Seinfeld pops in on Brad Garrett, hits the streets with Jerry Lewis
The guy who ventured onstage unexpectedly Tuesday night at Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club?
Jerry Seinfeld.
The guy cruising the streets of VegasVille in a vintage convertible Jaguar on Wednesday with Jerry Lewis riding shotgun?
Also Jerry Seinfeld.
Popping up around town with “Phantom”-like agility, Seinfeld dropped in on a pair of pals in Las Vegas this week. He was in town to shoot his online series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” then stopped by Lewis’ Las Vegas home.
Seinfeld’s show is a series of drive-along conversations with fellow comedians as they go out for coffee. The show debuted as a web series on Crackle in 2012, and is moving to Netflix this fall.
No time line has been announced for the Seinfeld-Lewis appearance. Past guests have included David Letterman, Louis C.K. and Lewis Black.
Seinfeld was also the latest in a line of top comics to check in with Garrett, who just signed a five-year lease extension to continue running the club at MGM Grand. Ray Romano (from Garrett’s days on “Everybody Loves Raymond”), Chris Rock, Louie Anderson and Jay Leno have also taken the stage at Garrett’s fun house in the hotel’s Underground promenade (as Garrett jokes, “We’re just a couple of doors down from the sock store”).
Garrett introduced Seinfeld with, “Here’s an up-and-comer who’s new to stand-up but shows a ton of potential. Mr. Jerry Seinfeld!”
“The crowd thought I was BS-ing, but he walked out and the place came unglued,” Garrett said. “He was so amazingly gracious to everyone.” This week’s headliners at Garrett’s club, Jimmy Shubert and Dale Jones, have been leveling the place, which is characteristically packed whenever Garrett hosts.
Garrett said he’s not part of Seinfeld’s “Coffee” series. At least not yet. But at the Underground, the master of his domain always has a place to park.
SOMETHING FOR JOEY
Joey Fatone, a man familiar with performing with boy bands, joined Backstreet Boys onstage Wednesday night at Axis theater at Planet Hollywood. AJ McLean pulled Fatone, late of ‘NSYNC, from the audience so the group could serenade him with “Shape of My Heart” (and requisite long-stemmed red rose). The moment was captured on video and lives on the @BackstreetBoys Instagram.
NO SLEEPERS IN THIS SCHEDULE
Smith Center exec Paul Beard said the final show added to the 2017-‘18 Broadway Series at the Smith Center was the revival of “The King & I,” which was booked in January.
“We didn’t feel we had room for it in the season, and then we started picking up the buzz of the touring show, hearing how good it was,” Beard said when the series was announced at Reynolds Hall last week. “To be honest, I didn’t like it at the Beaumont Theater (on Broadway). I actually slept through it. But when it came back out on the road, it was a much better show … the show we’re getting here is an absolute knockout.”
“The King & I” runs from Oct. 25-Oct. 29 at Reynolds Hall.
PUT UP THE DUKES
In an icy coincidence, the first player signed by the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights is Reid Duke. In 2002, the first official move made by minor-league Las Vegas Wranglers President Billy Johnson was to commission the costume worn by The Duke, the team’s mascot. Johnson obtained that outfit from his friend Dave Raymond, better known as the Phillie Phanatic.
