‘Hobbit’ actor arrested on assault charge

LOS ANGELES — San Antonio police have arrested "Hobbit" and "Arrow" actor Manu Bennett on a misdemeanor assault charge while he attended the Alamo City Comic Con.

Bennett, 45, was arrested early Sunday following an assault in progress call from the Grand Hyatt Hotel and was held on $1,600 bond. Police say Bennett punched a 29-year-old man at the hotel.

Bexar County Magistrate's Office records show Bennett was released from jail around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Bennett told the San Antonio police officer who arrested him that he was defending himself in the altercation.

Reps for Bennett had no immediate comment about the arrest.

Bennett is listed on the Celebrity Guest portion of the Alamo City Comic Con site and had been scheduled to attend Saturday and Sunday.

Bennett portrayed Azog the Defiler in the Hobbit trilogy, the gladiator Crixus in the TV series "Spartacus," Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in the CW show "Arrow" and is set to appear as Allanon in the upcoming MTV series "The Shannara Chronicles."
