Locals Only: Dive-in Movies return to The Cosmopolitan

Yeah, this column is called Locals Only.

And this event takes place on the Strip, which any local with even a lick of sense should know to avoid on Memorial Day.

But come on, where else can you relive the ’80s with a twin bill of “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and “The Goonies,” while staying cool in a sweet, sweet swimming pool, all for the princely sum of $3?

Every Monday from Memorial Day through Labor Day, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will host its third summer of Dive-In Movies at the Boulevard Pool with double-feature screenings at 7:30 and 10 p.m.

Classics including “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” will be shown on the hotel’s 65-foot digital marquee alongside more contemporary fare such as “Despicable Me” and “Moneyball” and plenty more ’80s nostalgia in the form of “Ghostbusters,” “The Breakfast Club” and “The Karate Kid.”

Specialty cocktails and snacks ranging from traditional popcorn and hot dogs to street tacos and Mexican corn will be available.

Cabanas and premium-view lounge chairs can be reserved through nightlifemarketing@ cosmopolitanlasvegas.com.

For more information, see www.cosmopolitanlasvegas. com.

Jazz in the Park

Going out on a high note, the Las Vegas Academy’s Jazz Combo makes the last of three Jazz in the Park appearances Saturday, sharing the bill with saxophonist and composer Tom Scott — who started his professional career as a teen, before playing with everybody from Steely Dan to Frank Sinatra to Barbra Streisand. (To say nothing of half of the Fab Four — former Beatles George Harrison and Paul McCartney — and the Blues Brothers.) Bring your picnic baskets, blankets and low-back chairs (or visit the food vendors on site) .

Details: Jazz in the Park, with the Las Vegas Academy Jazz Combo and Tom Scott, 7 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Amphitheater, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. (Seating begins at 6 p.m.) Call 455-8200.

Kuma Snow

Jet Tila, who was opening executive chef of Wazuzu at Encore, will open Kuma Snow Cream on Friday at 3735 Spring Mountain Road in the Chinatown area. Snow cream is described as a hybrid between ice cream and shaved ice. The shop will serve four to five core flavors and one to two seasonal choices, such as green tea, black sesame and honeydew.

Details: Kuma Snow Cream will be open from 11 a.m. to midnight daily. Call 816-5862.

Demon Lung

One of Vegas’ best bands, coed doom troupe Demon Lung, will play new tunes from their forthcoming full-length debut, “The Hundredth Name,” Thursday night. Don’t miss it.

Details: Demon Lung will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday at Backstage Bar & Billiards, 601 Fremont St. Tickets are $16 (382-2227).
