Tony Orlando knocking three times at South Point
Tony Orlando once rightly predicted that rock stars such as Elton John — who once scorned Las Vegas and its tuxedoed showmen — would end up on the Strip themselves.
Did he also know that he and John would one day be working here within the same week?
Granted, the South Point isn’t the Colosseum. But Orlando’s shows Friday through Sunday continue a Las Vegas career that dates to at least 1971, in a city that once hosted him 25 weeks per year.
Not bad for a 69-year-old who didn’t set out to be a live performer when he stepped out from his music-industry desk job to record his back-to-back hits (“Candida” and “Knock Three Times”) under the anonymous group name of Dawn.
The rest — including the name and, especially the mustache — became TV and Las Vegas history.
