Wavves crashing at Cosmo pool

For a while there, Wavves frontman Nathan Williams had turned not trying into a kind of aesthetic with disaffected, lo-fi jams befitting of a stoned stoner getting more stoned.

But this certainly isn’t the case on Wavves’ latest record, “Afraid of Heights,” which, contrary to its title, shows no fear when it comes to scaling outsize guitars and production values alike.

The ragged, beach bum charm of Wavves’ earlier efforts may be toned in places, but the band is the better for it here, with earnest, tightly wound anthems of indifference.

“There’s nothing to prove / There’s nothing to do / There’s nowhere to go / Got nothing to lose,” Williams sings on the title track to an album that sees this bunch living up to those words.
