5 events to check out in downtown Las Vegas this week

What’s happening this week in downtown Las Vegas:

■ In celebration of The Smiths and Morrissey, Boz Boorer, Close to Modern and the 11th Street Band will take over the Bunkhouse Saloon stage Friday. The show starts at 10 p.m. and costs $10. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door with cash. Come back to the downtown bar and venue, 124 11th St., on Monday for free open-mic night and karaoke.

■ Get “Down &Derby” at Gold Spike for its roller disco Wednesday. The fun begins at 10 p.m. in the backyard adult playground, 217 Las Vegas Blvd. North. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, return for live music and more fun.

■ Jaks N Cake come to the roof of Commonwealth on Thursday with Paradice, Blanco &Gambino, Byra Tanks and Bad Antikz.

■ Listen to Daniel Park at Container Park, 707 Fremont St., from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Then, get your groove on at B.U.B.B.’s Dance Party on from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. It’s a mix of “rock, funk, soul, swing big band, afro-beat, basically a global world of music that also spans across many generations,” the park’s website says.

■ Take an opportunity to meet other Las Vegas readers at the Writer’s Block Book Club on from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the book store, 1020 Fremont St. The group will discuss Toni Morrison’s “Sula.” Attendees are expected to have read the book in advance. There’s no cost.
