Ethel M plugging in its holiday lights

Ethel's/Ethel M Chocolates will flip the switch on the annual holiday lights display in its Botanical Cactus Garden at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with a visit from Santa from 5 to 9 p.m. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. daily (except Christmas) through Jan. 1. Local choirs will perform throughout the season, and Santa will be in attendance from 5 to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 22. Admission is free. Chef Joseph Keller is hosting a holiday tree auction and decorating fundraiser through Dec. 20 at his Bistro Zinc in MonteLago Village at Lake Las Vegas. Maggie Smith, the actor who won an Oscar for “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in 1969 and gained new fans in the 21st century as the dowager Countess of Grantham in “Downton Abbey” and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, died Friday.
